the white light

Saturday I went down to Brooklyn to see Beans formerly of Antipop Consortium for some bass heavy hip hop. Flowed pretty nice even for the accapella songs. Earlier had some vegetarian chinese which was a really big serving of which I couldn't finish, the first time that's happened.
Tonight was pretty special being the Drag City Christmas party, aside from it finally snowing ..so we will have a white Christmas after all. On the bill were Weird War, smog and Joanna Newsom who each took it in turn to play 3 sets each of 3 songs with costume changes. Weird War got a bit funky and politcal in there and along with the singers in between song discourses which always seemed to take a few left turns towards the theme of the song they were pretty much fun. smog was a bit depressing as you would expect but it seems like the whole crowd was pretty much there for Joana who certainly does have something special or magical. The highlight of her songs was a new one starting off about a bell being dropped down the stairs then dropped in the ocean then being tolled for her.. which turned into a bit of an epic with the feelings definitley coming through. All the performers came out at the end and did a Christmas type song about ringing the living bell or something like that, Joanna seemed very happy. Go here for more pics.
